Conditions for obtaining indulgences

1. A believer can obtain indulgences for themselves or for the deceased a maximum of twice a day


2. The believer is to be in a state of sanctifying grace

(Sacramental confession can be made a few days before the prescribed act is performed and does not have to be repeated.)


3. Holy Communion

(It is necessary for each indulgence to be performed on the same day on which the prescribed acts are performed.)


4. A disposition that excludes even venial sin and any attachment to sin


5. Prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father


6. Performing one of the specified acts

  • to make a religious pilgrimage to any jubilee sacred place
  • devotional visit to the jubilee site – individually or in a group
  • an act of mercy and repentance:
    • participation in folk missions, spiritual retreats, formation meetings
    • longer visits to those in need or difficulty
    • abstain from frivolous entertainment (real or virtual) for at least one day
    • dedicating a reasonable portion of their free time to volunteering for the benefit of the community

7. Plenary indulgences can also be obtained twice a day if the faithful legitimately receives Holy Communion a second time on the same day, but they only apply to the deceased
